Woman in Hong Kong Loses $2.5 Million in Online Scam

A housewife in Hong Kong lost approximately 2.5 million Hong Kong dollars (320,500 US dollars) in an online shopping scam after attempting to buy collagen drinks for 530 Hong Kong dollars (about 67 US dollars), according to police. The South China Morning Post, citing police's Facebook page «CyberDefender», reported that the victim saw a Facebook post advertising collagen drinks and transferred 530 Hong Kong dollars through an instant payment system. The seller later claimed the product was unavailable and offered to refund the money, sending the woman a link to a fake Facebook page requesting her online banking details. Believing the site was legitimate, the victim entered her information. Over the next few days, her savings were drained in four installments, incurring losses of nearly 2.5 million Hong Kong dollars. Police warn that scammers often lure victims with small purchases before deceiving them into revealing sensitive banking information. Police urged the public to be cautious with refund links that redirect to external websites and request account details.
