Japanese mathematician Kenjiro Fukaya has received an award in Hong Kong for his pioneering work in geometry, becoming the third Japanese to win the 'Shaw Prize,' which some see as the 'Nobel Prize of the East.' According to Japanese news agency Kyodo, yesterday, the Shaw Prize in Mathematical Sciences was awarded to Fukaya (66), who previously worked at the Universities of Tokyo and Kyoto, in Hong Kong on October 21 of last year. At the award ceremony, Fukaya said he was 'very happy to know that our work is understood and appreciated,' noting that he usually works alone and that those around him often do not understand what he is working on. The Shaw Prize, established in Hong Kong by the late Chinese entrepreneur, producer, and filmmaker Run Run Shaw, has been awarded annually since 2004. Each prize includes a medal, a certificate, and a cash award of $1.2 million.
