Hong Kong authorities concluded rescue operations after a major fire in the Tai Po district. The incident left 128 dead and approximately 200 missing. One firefighter died in the line of duty.


Hong Kong residential fire kills at least 128 people

Fire extinguishing, rescue, and search operations following the fire at Wang Fuk Court concluded on Friday morning, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) reported. Chris Tang Ping-keung, Secretary for Security of the HKSAR Government, stated at a press conference that the incident, which occurred in the Tai Po district, has so far resulted in at least 128 deaths. It is not ruled out that more bodies may be found when police enter the scene to conduct an investigation. Additionally, Tang noted that approximately 200 people remain missing. In total, fire engines were dispatched 391 times to the affected area, and 185 ambulances were called. A total of 2,311 firefighters and ambulance personnel assisted at the scene. Twelve firefighters were injured, and Ho Wai-ho, from the Sha Tin fire station, died in the line of duty, reported Andy Yeung Yan-kin, Director of the Fire Services Department of the HKSAR Government.
