A judge in Hong Kong ordered that the 34-year-old British businessman Jamie Tzewee Chapman remains in custody after being charged with murder. The crime is related to the death of an Indonesian woman, Mevi Novitasari, whose body was found in a waterfall in a park on the island. Chapman, along with his Hong Kong wife, was arrested after returning from mainland China.
Chapman's wife was initially detained on suspicion of aiding the crime but was released on bail while investigations continue. According to the police, Chapman and the Indonesian woman had visited the waterfall in question together on Sunday night. The judge decided to postpone the case until January to allow more time for the investigation.
The victim, Mevi Novitasari, around 25 years old, was a domestic worker in Hong Kong, although she was not employed by Chapman. According to the police, Novitasari was struck on the head and subsequently drowned.
Indonesian legal entities will be involved in the repatriation of Novitasari's remains, and the Consulate General of Indonesia will closely monitor the development of the investigation. The businessman left the park where the waterfall was located about half an hour before the woman’s body was discovered in a nearby pond.
